Angeliki Stogia Selected as Labour Candidate for Gorton and Denton By-Election

Angeliki Stogia has been chosen as the Labour Party’s candidate for the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election in Greater Manchester.

Campaign Focus on Unity and Community

Speaking to supporters, Stogia said she was excited to campaign and described herself as a proud Mancunian who understands the needs of the community.

She emphasized unity, fairness, and hope, saying the election represented a choice between togetherness and division.

Controversy Over Andy Burnham

The decision comes after Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham was blocked from standing in the contest by Labour’s ruling body. Party officials said allowing him to run would have triggered an unnecessary mayoral election.

Burnham accepted the decision but said he wanted to defend the region from political division.

Reaction Inside the Party

Several Labour MPs criticized the decision to block Burnham, with dozens signing a letter of protest.

Stogia previously ran as a Labour candidate in another constituency in 2024 but was unsuccessful. Party leaders believe her local background will strengthen Labour’s chances in the by-election.
