AlphaGenome: Decoding the "Dark Genome" to Transform Medicine
In what experts are calling a "major milestone," Google’s DeepMind has unveiled AlphaGenome, an AI model designed to map the human genetic code. While traditional genetics focuses on the 2% of our DNA that codes for proteins, AlphaGenome dives into the remaining 98%—often called the "dark genome."
The dark genome is where many mutations linked to high blood pressure, dementia, and obesity are hidden. By analyzing up to one million letters of DNA code at once, this AI can predict how subtle changes in our "recipe for life" lead to disease. Unlike previous models, AlphaGenome can predict the impact of changing even a single letter in the genetic sequence.
Accelerating Drug Discovery
Researchers at the University of Exeter and the Francis Crick Institute are already using the tool to identify drug targets. By predicting how genes are expressed (turned on or off), AlphaGenome helps scientists skip years of manual lab work. Though the team at DeepMind admits the model still needs refinement in predicting long-distance gene regulation, it marks the start of a new era in synthetic biology and personalized medicine.
