The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued an updated safety warning for patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists. These popular weight-loss injections, known by brand names like Wegovy, Ozempic, and Mounjaro, are now linked to a rare but serious risk of acute pancreatitis—a condition where the pancreas becomes severely inflamed.
As nearly 1.6 million adults in the UK now use these "miracle" weight-loss drugs, the MHRA emphasizes that while they are generally safe, the physical toll on the digestive system must be monitored closely. The pancreas is a small but vital organ behind the stomach that produces enzymes for digestion and hormones like insulin. When it becomes inflamed, it can cause lasting damage if not treated immediately.
Symptoms and Immediate Action
Health officials advise users to be alert for "extreme and persistent" stomach pain that often radiates to the back. This pain is typically accompanied by nausea and vomiting. If these symptoms appear, the advice is to stop the medication and consult a doctor instantly.
"For the vast majority, these are safe and effective medicines," says Dr. Alison Cave, MHRA Chief Safety Officer. "However, being alert to the symptoms is critical for patient safety."
