Ukraine Sports Minister Slams "Infantile" Fifa President Over Russia Ban Comments
Ukraine's sports minister has labeled Fifa president Gianni Infantino "irresponsible" and "infantile" following suggestions that world football's governing body might consider lifting the current ban on Russian teams.
Russian national teams and clubs have been suspended from all Fifa and Uefa competitions since February 2022. Despite the ongoing conflict, Infantino recently claimed the ban "has not achieved anything" and suggested that allowing Russian youth to play in Europe could help ease tensions.
"Detached from Reality"
Minister Matvii Bidnyi responded sharply, stating that Infantino’s words detach football from the reality of a war where athletes are being killed. Bidnyi highlighted that over 650 Ukrainian athletes and coaches, including more than 100 footballers, have died since the start of the aggression.
While Russia remains barred from major tournaments like the 2026 World Cup, they continue to play matches against non-Western nations. Bidnyi reiterated that as long as the aggression continues, Russian national symbols have no place in international sport.
Paralympic Participation Update
The controversy follows similar tensions in the Paralympic community. While the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) lifted its ban on athletes from Russia and Belarus last year, they will still be absent from the upcoming Winter Paralympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo due to individual sport governing body decisions.
